The Brahmas Secondary and the Coach Josh Jones Effect

Despite the San Antonio Brahmas struggling on defense in their 2025 season, three players within their secondary have drawn the attention of NFL scouts. Safety Henry Black played in 206 defensive snaps for the Brahmas, which helped land him a contract with the Atlanta Falcons. Cornerback Sean Fresch was a late-season addition for SA, appearing in 125 snaps in two games, but was recently called up for a tryout by the Philadelphia Eagles. Cornerback Derrick Langford, who played in five games for the Brahmas, was called up by the Green Bay Packers for a workout. The UFL to NFL pipeline has served San Antonio Brahmas players well. Despite a subpar season, according to PFNewsroom.com, the Brahmas are currently in first place for the most NFL signed players at 10. (PFNewsroom, 2025) Hopefully, soon we’ll hear names like Jordan Mosley, Jalen Elliott, Corey Mayfield Jr., and Chris Steele, all part of the Brahma secondary, getting their shot in the NFL.
Coach Jones’ Coaching Journey
What is one thing all these players have in common? They all played for and were coached by Coach Josh Jones. Coach Jones has been in professional coaching for 12 years, the last two with the San Antonio Brahmas. I had the opportunity to sit down with him to discuss his time with the San Antonio Brahmas.
When I asked him what he attributes his success in his coaching career to, he said, “just working hard, putting my head down, not asking for anything, and letting my work be my resume.” As a kid from a small school in LA who played quarterback, running back, and cornerback, it is easy to see that a good work ethic has always been an intangible quality for Coach Jones that has undoubtedly contributed to his success as a professional coach.
Connection With Other Brahma Coaches
I asked Coach Jones if there was a player or person within the Brahmas organization he’s connected with in the past couple of years while on the staff. He said, “There was no better connection than with Head Coach Wade Phillips. He is the most genuine and down-to-earth individual you could ever meet. Given his track record, career, and legacy, in the locker room, it all starts with him.” Coach Jones also discussed his relationship with GM Mark Lillibridge and defensive line coach Chris Achuff. He complimented Lillibridge, who had assembled a great team, pointing to the symbiotic relationship between coach and GM.

Coach Jones spoke about his interactions with current defensive line coach Chris Achuff. He said he likes to go into his office and “mess with him during the week and in one-on-one activities, but does his best to give him his space on game days.” The cohesion between the secondary and front seven is critical for a successful defense on the field, so the relationship between a secondary coach and front seven coaches is also significant.
Scouting and Preparations for Next Season
Our conversation shifted to the upcoming UFL season as we talked about what type of player he looks for in his secondary: “You need to have length, and if you don’t have length, you need to be aggressive.” One piece of advice he shared for young players is to find a friend who plays wide receiver and “work on man coverage techniques every day.”
We next discussed plans for next season. I asked Coach Jones if he had begun preparations by scouting players and mentioned the upcoming rookie draft. He said,” GM bridge handles most of those roster moves. He has done an excellent job for the past two years. I think he has put together a superb football team with outstanding talent. Hence, I trust him and I trust his eyes and evaluation, so whatever direction he goes, if he’s got guys he wants me to look at, then I’ll look at them, and he’ll usually send them to me or ask me what I think about him and go from there.”
There is still no official word on the Brahmas’ coaching staff, and no players from this year’s roster have been resigned. The league is likely focusing on relocation talks and plans. Time will tell if there is a head coach in the draft room with GM Mark Lillibridge in the September rookie draft.
Offseason Activities
Towards the end of our interview, I was able to ask Coach Jones more about what he does during the offseason. He mentioned his girlfriend is the head volleyball coach for the University of Memphis. Since her season is just starting, he’s spending most of his “time cooking and cleaning and doing those household things just to find something to do.” Coach Jones said he’s not even the most fiery coach in his household; that title goes to his girlfriend. He’s the “chill, laid back coach”, and “she’s not over the top, but she will get after them though.”
Ultimately, Coach Jones is like the rest of us: looking forward to the NFL and college football seasons, staying driven, and putting in work. Like most of us, he will be watching his favorite team and keeping an eye out for future San Antonio Brahmas players.
Thanks, Coach Jones, for sitting with us and pulling back the curtain. From each one of us out here in the cow pasture, we hope to see him on the Brahmas’ sideline next year and in many years to come.
