A Legendary Coach Joins the Toros Staff

The San Antonio Toros have made a blockbuster addition to their coaching staff ahead of their inaugural 2026 season in the revitalized Continental Football League (CoFL), hiring legendary coach Jerry Glanville as defensive coordinator.

The announcement, shared by the team, brings one of football’s most colorful and experienced figures to the Alamo City. Known as “The Man in Black” for his signature all-black attire and bold personality, Glanville arrives with a resume spanning decades across the NFL, college football, and alternative pro leagues.
Glanville’s Coach Experience
Glanville boasts 20 years of NFL experience, highlighted by his head-coaching tenures with the Houston Oilers (1985-1989) and the Atlanta Falcons (1990-1993). During his time in Houston, he led the “Run and Shoot” offense to prominence and built a reputation for aggressive, hard-hitting defenses that intimidated opponents. He also played in various defensive roles for the Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, and Detroit Lions.
Beyond the pros, Glanville has over a decade of collegiate coaching experience, including a head-coaching stint at Portland State (2007-2009) and defensive coordinator roles at the University of Hawaii (2005-2006). More recently, he served as defensive coordinator at Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NCAA Division II) starting in 2024.

His familiarity with non-traditional leagues makes him a perfect fit for the CoFL’s summer pro format. Glanville previously served as defensive coordinator for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (CFL, 2018) and Tampa Bay Vipers (XFL, 2020), and as head coach of the Conquerors in The Spring League (2020-2021).
On the Field
“The San Antonio Toros are pleased to add the legendary Jerry Glanville to our staff as Defensive Coordinator,” team president Joshua Mair said. “We look forward to Coach Glanville’s disciplined, yet aggressive style of defense in San Antonio this summer. Welcome, coach!”
Glanville’s larger-than-life persona extends beyond the gridiron—he raced on the NASCAR circuit for multiple years and even had a popular video game, Jerry Glanville’s Pigskin Footbrawl, in the early 1990s. When Glanville was asked what the Toros can expect from his defense, he said “Effort” and “hard hitting, coach Glanville followed up with, “If the players don’t want to give the max effort and make hard hits, they need to look into another profession.” Implying that Toros fans can expect an aggressive defensive style.

As the Toros prepare for their return to professional football—reviving a historic name that dominated the Texas Football League and original CoFL in the late 1960s and early 1970s—this hire signals serious intent to build a tough, entertaining brand of football for San Antonio fans.
The only remaining question is whether Elvis will have tickets waiting for him at Will Call.
The Toros’ 2026 campaign kicks off this summer in the CoFL’s Southern Division. With Glanville calling the shots on defense, expect the “Toros” to bring plenty of attitude and intensity to the field.
