San Antonio Toros Tap Legendary Broadcaster Greg Simmons and Marine Veteran Ken Lucas for Game-Day Broadcast Team

The San Antonio Toros have strengthened their 2026 Continental Football League (CoFL) campaign with the addition of two respected local voices to their game-day broadcast team. The team announced Monday that longtime San Antonio sports broadcaster Greg Simmons will serve as the play-by-play announcer, with former Judson High School standout and U.S. Marine veteran Ken Lucas joining as color analyst.

The pairing brings decades of combined football knowledge, storytelling experience, and deep community ties to the Toros’ broadcasts from Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium on the University of the Incarnate Word campus.

“Greg Simmons is a true San Antonio icon, and Ken Lucas brings outstanding knowledge and perspective,” said Toros co-owner Joshua Mair. “From our players and coaches to our staff and now our broadcast team, we are committed to delivering a first-class football experience for our city — while keeping it affordable, with tickets starting at just $10.

” The Toros are preparing for their return as part of the eight-team CoFL, a summer league that will run from mid-May through early July, culminating in a championship game around Independence Day. Home games will be played at the 6,000-seat Benson Stadium, with an emphasis on family-friendly entertainment, tailgating, and a dedicated kids’ zone.

The franchise’s fan-driven ownership model is designed to keep the team permanently rooted in San Antonio, in contrast to previous minor-league football ventures that eventually left the city. The revived Toros also carry historical significance, honoring the original San Antonio Toros franchise that dominated the Texas Football League in the late 1960s and early 1970s before advancing to the Continental Football League.

A Legendary Voice Returns to the Booth

Greg Simmons will be bringing more than 50 years of broadcasting experience to the Toros. A 1974 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, Simmons began his career early, launching a student radio station at Jefferson and securing his first professional radio job while still in high school. He later worked at KBUC before joining KSAT-TV in 1980, where he rose to sports director in 1985 and held the position for nearly four decades.

Known for his coverage of high school football, the San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Cowboys training camp, and local athletics, Simmons became one of the most recognizable sports voices in South Texas. In 2022, the San Antonio Independent School District inducted him into its Athletic Hall of Fame, recognizing him as “one of the most famous sports media personalities the city of San Antonio has ever produced.

” Simmons stepped away from his full-time role at KSAT in early 2023. He returned to the public eye in late 2025, voicing concerns about declining local sports coverage on television newscasts. His selection as the Toros’ play-by-play voice marks a welcome return to the booth for one of the city’s most trusted sports figures.

Football Insider with Championship and Military Experience

Ken Lucas adds on-field credibility and leadership perspective to the broadcast. A member of Judson High School’s 1988 5A state championship team under Hall of Fame coach D.W. Rutledge, Lucas went on to serve 15 years as a U.S. Marine Corps officer, completing multiple deployments.

For the past nine years, Lucas has worked as a broadcaster with Texas Sports Productions, developing a reputation for clear, insightful game analysis. His combination of playing experience, military-honed discipline, and recent broadcasting work makes him a strong complement to Simmons.

Building Excitement for Summer Football

The Toros’ 2026 schedule features divisional play against regional rivals in a compact, high-energy season. With tickets starting at $10 and a strong emphasis on community engagement, the team aims to make Benson Stadium a destination for families across South Texas.

As the season approaches, the addition of Simmons and Lucas is expected to enhance the game-day experience for both longtime fans and newcomers. Their familiar voices will bring the action to life from the booth, continuing a proud tradition of San Antonio football.

To catch all the Toros action on the field, tickets are now available, including fan-ownership options. Toros’ opening day is on May 30 versus the Texas Syndicate.
